1986 Mazda B2000 Electric Conversion, redo exterior paint & interior.
09-23-2008-Last year we had this truck and Dan removed a lot of parts to prepare for the conversion to all electric. The vehicle was than semi-assembled and delivered back to owner where he had it shipped out to a place where the electric conversion took place. The owner was kind enough to let us borrow the CD in which a lot of pictures were taken during the conversion process. The truck is now here again to finish where we left off. The plans are to install new seat covers, carpet, new right fender, radio parts, and to repair & repaint the body in single stage paint. 09-24-2008-Dan removed the rear bumper, right front fender, radio antenna, grille, bed liner, front bumper and both door mirrors. For parts report. 10-01-2008-Dan removes the stripe on the side of truck and grinds the rusty areas off of the top edge of the bed. Holes where the camper top was will be welded up, while Ken finds the paint code and gives Daniel the formula to mix the paint. 10-02-2008-Dan moved the truck indoors and welded up the holes made by the camper top and grind them smooth.10-09-2008-C*Dan removed the bolts on the hinge part of the bed and the two mountings for the shock absorber. Camera was not available, but photos will be updated tomorrow. The bed will now be lifted and removed from truck for further repairs.1 10-10-2008-B*-Ken & Dan remove the bed section onto a boat trailer as the body rack is being used by the 1985 Chevy s-10 pick up truck. Dan completely washed all painted areas of truck, including tail gate jams and door jams of grease , grime, pine needles and leaves. Grinding started to take place on some dents on the truck and bed as Dan starts roughing out the body. 10-16-2008AB*Dan worked on removing and roughing out dents on exterior bed panels. The rear tailgate was removed. Both rear hinges were media blasted, than the bed body was sanded down to remove scratches in paint. 10-20-2008-BC*--The bed cart (tool) was picked up from Carolina Auto Restorers and brought back to Auto Fashions, Ken & Dan loaded bed cart up with the Mazda truck bed. The boat trailer was removed from the shop. Later in the evening after 6:00pm Dan sand-blasted the rusty areas of the bed and appling body filler in low areas. Photos will be taken tomorrow. To answer your question on the answering machine Jim. It will help the company, but the speed will be the same-Its the best I can do. 10-21-2008-Dan continues to add filler and sand the bed. A little bit of Mazda paint was mix up by Dan to paint the inside trim on the front fender tomorrow. 10-22-2008-Dan prepares the trim parts and the inside of the fender to be painted, then mask off the fender and paint these areas. After it flashes Ken (while painting Honda & Gas tank parts) clear coat the trimmed areas that were painted by Dan earlier. Later in the evening when the panel was try, Dan installs the right front fender on the vehicle. There are some mounting that need to be drilled out so the additional fender parts can be installed 10-27-2008-Dan sprays the open metal exposed areas with spray paint on the cab of the truck and move the truck to another location on Auto Fashions property. Then Dan works in the evening and continued to sand filler and fill low areas smooth on the bed. 10-29-2008C*-Dan Moves the Chevy Tahoe Auto Sale vehicle that was in the body shop out and moves it out to storage for a later date. Your Cab portion of your Mazda was parked now in this area to be worked on 11-04-2008A*-Dan removed both front seats 11-06-2008C*Dan works a couple of hours on body work on the bed (Note on 11-27-2008-Your batteries are completely charged-Green Light! 12-03-2008-The Carpet is almost finished being removed from the vehicle 12-04-2008B*-Dan removes all the interior trim panels around the inside rear of the cab, including rear seats & charger unit. All parts & pieces have been placed on shelves. 12-09-2008-Ken & Dan load up the bed section on our tow truck from Auto Fashions to be taken to our other shop Carolina Auto Restorers to continue doing the body work and get ready to have it primed. 12-10-2008--John continues to do the body work. 12-11-2008-John finished the body work today and the bed was primed.
12-27-2008-Dan brought the vehicle up to the shop and the vehicle is once again on Charge 12-29-2008-Dan removed the 85 ford truck out of body shop and drove back in the Mazda front cab section-worked on setting up tools, roughing out the dent in the hood, left fender 01-06-2009A*-Dan starts sanding down hood, than the compressor breaks down at autofashions, so Dan loaded up the Mazda on the Tow truck and unload it into Car inc service bay where he roughs out the entire cab body section. Later (not shown) some body filler has been applied. 01-07-2009-Dan continues working on the body, adding more filler and sanding the areas that were roughed out earlier. 01-08-2009-Same kind of work as yesterday. Ken moves vehicle to storage, so area can be clean for painting Acura 01-18-2009-Dan brings vehicle back into shop & Sets up area for work again. 01-19-2009--Dan continues to add the second coat of filler to the body. John will now take over to finish the body work on the Cab as Dan now puts his attention on the Cobra. The Carpet arrived today and will be installed when vehicle is painted. 01-20-2009-John & Ken take their chances on the highways through the snow and arrive at CARinc John's report: continue where Dan left off with filling, then block the areas of work out, and prime the entire cab. Dan drove by later in the evening to capture some pictures 01-21-2009-John worked on blocking out the entire Cab and Ken was blocking out the bed. The masking off the glass began, followed by painting the entire Cab, vent panel & bed sections. Next are the front bumper, rear bumper, fix the driver door window frame, side view mirrors, restore them & paint them. Dan sets up the seats to start removing the coverings and photos were taken when Dan delivered the 73-SJ hood to CARinc. 01-22-2009 ABC*-Everyone worked on the vehicle today including this evening. Ken & John assemble the bed on to the truck and secure it down and attach the shock lift kit The vent panel was installed. The window frame was filled in with metal bond. The door mirrors will cover this area. In the evening Dan brings parts from the other shop in his van and installs the tail lights, the rear hood weather strip, the windshield wiper arms & the tail gate latch. The outlet box for the charger was repaired, since one of the hold down tabs fell in the cab corner inner reinforcement and could not be retrieved. The radio antenna could not fit in the hole of fender because a different type is needed. The new carpet container was open yesterday for the first time and Dan found a problem with the wrong color, so the carpet was shipped back to the supplier and a new one was ordered yesterday. They said the new order will arrive on Monday the 26th. Dan made an estimate for the interior work today, but was turned down by the customer, so the original seats and interior trim will be reinstalled except for the carpet which will be New. 01-23-2009-Photos were updated and now Dan loads up in his van the bed liner, front bumper parts from AutoFashions and deliver it to CARinc. Dan than washes the underside of bed liner and installs it along with some screws found for the tailgate access panel. While Dan runs to radio shack to pick up a camera card for the shop camera Ken had ordered some High performance air shocks and also used the custom new coil springs that Jim had install when he had the truck converted to electric. Ken welds the coil springs brackets to the rear axle and to the upper frame rail to give an additional lift that was needed for the rear leaf springs. Now the truck road height has been corrected and Jim can haul items in the back of his truck. Ken also found that the tires are not rated for heavy load, so Ken will call the tire shop to have these changed out. Ken continues to work with the driver door window frame that will be painted soon 01-26-2009-The Correct Carpet arrived, but it wasn't pre-cut, so to make the job go faster Dan loaded up the Mazda from CARinc on the towed truck and hauled it back to AutoFashions where the remaining parts will be installed interior & exterior pieces. 01-27-2009-Dan separates the face bar from the bumper cover plastic parts 01-28-2009-Dan starts to install the carpet and cutting the carpet around areas of mounting and for threading cables to fit. 01-29-2009- Dan updated some photos'as I lost the one that were in our new camera when I was trying to adjust picture size I accidentally formatted the card, so this morning an updated was made. 01-30-2009-Tailgate hinges were painted. 02-02-2009A*-Dan installs the tail gate hinges and hardware along with the tailgate. The radio antenna was installed, but not hooked up 02-03-2009-photo updated 02-04-2009-Dan cut out the old rusty carriage bolts that were attached to the plastic bumper cover and than drilled out the after market face bar so that new Carriage bolts could be installed. New carriage bolts were installed and now the entire piece is ready to install back on the truck 02-06-2009-Selfish Ken locks me out of CARinc and the problems begin. Dispite my hardship & Kens selfishness the project continues... 02-11-2009-Charged Batteries 02-13-2009-Dan rough out dents from rear bumper. 02-19-2009-<>Bumper was set up to do work on it, but they were painting at CARinc and the fumes were too much to bare in the work area. 02-20-2009A-Dan worked at CARinc on the rear bumper with adding filler and priming as Ken unlocked the door for me. 02-23-2009-I don't remember 02-24-2009-worked on removing front batteries & adjusting front bumper, found horn & replaced it at autofashions. 02-25-2009-worked on installing interior trim pieces, install the cord electrical outlet cover. Owner stopped by today.
02-26-2009A*-Photo update. 03-02-2009-C-Removed the tail gate handle and polished it, reinstalled it at N/C. Install bedliner shield to tail gate. 03-09-2009BC*retapped threads on bumper bracket mounting and adjust bumper as high as it can go on the right side. Remove front bumper & grille and take it to CAR, so Ken can paint it since he can do it a lot faster than I can since my main compressor is out and space is limited. Add body filler to driver door window frame and sand smooth, followed by spraying black primer. Later after sanding, masking was performed follow by painting both sides of window door frames. New photo was made for new horn that was installed last week. 03-10-2009-C*Remove masking from painting and continue working on installing the interior trim & adjusting carpet to fit. All the kick panels, threshold panels and other interior trim pieces along with the passenger seat have been installed. The driver seat has not been installed because work in the radio area. 03-11-2009B*-Jessica called from C.A.R. to tell me that one of the guys had painted the rear bumper & front bumper covers last night and that they were all ready to pick up. Not sure about the mirrors if they been painted or not. I had to borrow my fathers truck because my van is fully loaded and I didn't want to scratch the pieces. This parts will be picked up tomorrow morning from C.A.R. 03-12-2009B*I drove by C.A.R. and John helped me load up my truck with the parts. Later all these parts were installed along with turn signals housings, side markers, charging outlet, Install battery plastic guard,Rear Bumper, all the batteries, cables & unpainted mirrors. 03-17-2009ABC* Finish Installing inner wheel well on right front fender, Install rubber flap that covers horn relay on right side, work on original radio got it to work-repaired wiring, finish installing trim hardware in the interior. Install license plate. Bought some inexpensive new floor mats in Pittsboro. 03-18-2009A*B*C^^-Owner dropped by this morning to look at the vehicle. After searching out sources owner said he take care of having the keys made for the door locks, obtaining a new hood latch release cable and exterior trim piece missing on passenger mirror. I finish carpet work & installing new floor matts. Cleaned exterior mirrors and install them. Finish the wiring and finish installing the radio, brackets for evaporator, radio covers,knobs, stick shift boot, knob, sew in bridge carpet behind radio, install driver seat. I have confirmed with Ken about polish the paint, so vehicle will be driven over to C.A.R when I'm finished with it. I drove to Ace hardware to obtain special rivets that I do not have for the handle on the emergency jack compartment lid.C* Finish installing dust rubber shield under generator (engine compartment). 03-19-2009A*-Drove vehicle to C.A.R. so Ken & John can work on the body, while I was there Ken said he take care of cleaning the interior as best as possible along with the paint, since the cleaning supplies are over there. I had a very important meeting at Wake Medical Hospital this afternoon that I needed to be at, so replacing the carpet on the compartment lid for the emergency Jack have not been done. 03-20-2009 AB*Invoice work for CAR and~~ AUTOFASHIONS Invoice later. The compartment lid the carpet pad was replaced. The hinges were made out of plastic and broken when the rivets were being removed, so another set of hinges were install. 03-21-2009 A*-I touched up the tail gate hinges with paint, touch up door mirror bolts, found the missing plastic piece of the door mirror and installed it on the passenger side, Finish installing the seat railing trim that wasn't installed. Ken said since he under cut the compartmemt hinges he would repair the compartment lid and install it and finish what he promised on the hood of vehicle. At this point I'm personally finished with the mazda except for getting paid by Ken and the small repair to remove the batteries to be able to adjust the front bumper, the horn replacement that was extra.
