1953-F100 Pick-up Truck-Restoration

1953 Ford F-100

Previous process of restoration or customizing pictures are not shown because we have limited web space for pictures online for each project.

Customer request not to remove the Chassis ( frame) from truck.  Only ask to remove grime ,rust scale & bond as best as possible.

  1. Updated website with some previous.  Old website failed to back up information and were lost.
  2. Photo update.  Bead Blasted parts & inspect upper bearing again with purple line attached.  After cleaning It doesn't need replacing, so the new bearing with green line will be credit back to your account.  The original parts will be used as they do not have any wear on them-purple lines. Photo shows all parts, new seals & gaskets.
  3. The report made yesterday above is incorrect.  After pulling out of storage the old steering worm & shaft I found the other upper bearing that is defective.  I thought there was only a lower bearing set.  My finger is pointing toward the additional bearing I over looked in photo above.  The bearing racing in housing is good.  The wear is on the bearing & race on the worm side.  The red line shows the defective chipped worm gear & bearing.  Anyways the gear has been assembled, clean & bonded.  The gear has not pre loaded yet until column & steering wheel are installed.  I may have to pull the lower steering housing cover plate out again to add or remove spacer gaskets to adjust the proper adjustment for pre loaded steering wheel.
  4. Removed high beam step switch mounting.  start removing remaining wiring harness & start replacing areas with new wiring harness. High beam step switch connections cleaned & replaced.  Mounting plate will be restored at later date. starter switch, wiper & light switch removed from dash.  soon new wiring will be installed on these switches  All new wiring leading into engine compartment passed through new rubber grommet on firewall.
  5. Continue replacing old wires with new wires on components under dash.  remove Ignition switch.  Some wire attach here that are not included with wiring kit.  Install light switch.  Cleaning starter switch connections.  Remove old wiring harness from truck
  6. There are wires under dash that need replacing that were not included in wiring harness kit.  The photo above circled in yellow are for the wiper switch.  These wires need replacing along with clock, fog switch & accessory wires.  Maybe the ford place you ordered from have the other wires under dash-otherwise they will have to be made using the correct color identification.
  7. Remove old painted Instrument bezel moulding & bead blast.  Then Polished metal. Photo shows bezel temporarily installed in dash until its reinstalled to instruments at a later date
  8. Researched parts source for the wiring on pages 75-77 of your part source place.  At the present time I think its wise for me to just go ahead and replace the wiring were it needs to be replaced.  I think ordering individual pieces will take longer and be more expensive than for me to go in and replace the needed wire where it is rotten with the same color identification..
  9. worked under dash
  10. worked under dash, picked up new wiring & parts.
  11. Removed rust from Radiator support with grinding, bead blasting & sanding. Coat with rust protector.
  12. Prep & Bond upper facing frame rails in engine compartment.
  13. Scrape down rusty scales & dirt from chassis. photos above showing red X show the areas that were cleaned rusty.   Green arrows are cleaned, have rust prevention or under-coat. The Parking cable was removed & the threads were repaired.
  14. Apply rust prevention on chassis that was cleaned on the 9th and undercoat bottom of floor panel under cab, but above transmission. The last pictures are the frame rails inside the right wheel to follow through with the same process.
  15. Scrape down outer frame rail on right side as shown in new picture.  Also scrape down all the inner fender wheel well of grit & grime for under coating.  There were two more pictures that were taken, but for some reason they will not upload to site.
  16. Scrape down outer frame rail on LEFT side .  Also scrape down all the inner fender wheel well of grit & grime for under coating. Found a rusted out area the size of four quarters side by side that needs to be covered with fiberglass to keep grit & grime from entering in the future from front tire.   There is already dirt in hole that will be removed before apply patch. Photo soon when it can be updated as we are having problems uploading to site.  Also what is needed is a new wire wheel as the one I been using is worn out.
  17. ~Planning on applying a steel patch on rusted out hole on left side inner wheel well.  Welding cannot be done here in fear of messing up original paint on fender.
  18. Prep up Right fender with masking paper, applied rust prevention (yellow X) on outer front frame rail that was cleaned & undercoat the inner fender well with undercoat (Green X).
  19. Parts ordered.
  20. Parts arrived.
  21. Installed starter Insulator kit on starter.
  22. Prep frame rails for bonding.
  23. Bond all frame rails around the transmission area of truck.
  24. Office work.-Your status is HOLD
  25. Office work-Thanks for your deposits from checks #1497- & #1507.

  27. Thank-you for your deposit from checks #1532-
  28. Thank-you for your deposit from check #1541
  29. Thank-you for your deposit from check #1552
  30. Daniel will continue to remove scale & rust under cross members in rear of truck where I left off near rear axle.
  31. Rear parking cables will be removed for bonding in silver. Scale will be removed from Frame rails shown in red.
  32. Thank-you for your deposit from check #5005
  33. Dan is removed the rear parking brake cables from truck and later spend more time scraping the dirt and old rusty scale from chassis to continue the bonding process where I left off.  I will work as much as I can with the remaining balance that you have in your account.
  34. Dan bonds the ceiling of the cab right above the transmission area.  Then the transmission was mounted up on the front cross member. The rear motor mounts hardware were glass blasted.   The driveshaft was pulled out from storage to be installed later.
  35. ~Dan plans on scraping down more chassis frame members in the rear of the truck, so it can be bonded.
  36. Dan glass blasted the parking cables.  It will be treated rust remover and be bonded later.
  37. Thank-you for your deposit #5033.  Invoice #37 has been mailed to you
  38. Dan media blast horn assembly, release bearing fork,  front engine support & theFront Harmonic balancer. ~these parts with be prepared for painting with High temperature paint.
  39. Dan installs the driveshaft to the rear transmission and placed on the differential.  It has not been tighten down here as the underside of truck still is being cleaned and bonded.
  40. The engine pick up tube and screen needs to be replaced.  I started making a new parts order.
  41. The parts that were media blasted on 2-19-08 will be painted later today.Dan prepared all the media blasted parts with sanding and cleaning, later I wired them up on the parts rack since Ken was painting in black today with the S-10 Chassis parts.  Ken paints the parts I provided.
  42. Early this morning the painted parts were removed from the paint booth and stored in a box
  43. There is no charge for the following work for the rest of today as I been cleaning up around your Ford with the parts inventory and laid out in a different location in shop as I been moving some equipment around
  44. Yesterday I had problems finding the special reamer tool to cut the bushing for the King Pin to do the work on the front end suspension, but luckily I remembered about an old garage that has been in business for 52 years working with old Ford tractors.  We drove to his place and he said he had the tool to do the job, so now the bushings will be cut properly and the front end suspension work is on it way to be reassembled
  45. Just an updated photo of the King Pins reamed out on the bushing work at the machine shop.
  46. During the moving of stuff on Kens arrival to shop I misplaced the water pump mounting bolts, So in my spare time I will look for them in a box somewhere.  I decided move to doing work on the front cross member and start rebuilding up the front suspension until bolts are found.
  47. <>XX
  48. Dan sets up for media blasting for the "U"-bolts for the front suspension cross member and degrease the cross member from storage.
  49. Mailed Invoice #38-I received your email.  I hope you and your family are doing well, take care...
  50. Thank-you for your deposit from check #5086
  51. Dan removed the electrical harness to the rear lights and scraped down some rear cross members under the bed of truck.
  52. Dan finished scraping down the cross members under the bed of truck as best as possible.  Some tiny steel brushes will be used tomorrow to get in the tighter places.  Later in the day I worked on removing dirty rusty scales from right inner fender well, right rear leaf spring, outer rear frame rail, behind the rear bumper, parts of the rear axle housing.
  53. Dan finished scraping down dirt & rusty scale on what was left on frame rails, suspension parts and differential. Used compressed air to remove dust, than coated parts with rust protector~soon, small areas of steel patching and the final bonding , under coating will be applied to the under carriage
  54. Dan worked on the bonding process where it has already been coated with the rust protector on right rear leaf spring and rails, center right rails inner and some of the left rear leaf spring.
  55. Dan masked off the exterior painted part of body of both rear fenders, leaf springs and rear brakes that were bonded, then both inner rear wheel wells were sprayed with rubberized under coating.
  56. Thank-you for check # 5140
  57. Dan moves the long block part of the engine assembly into the engine compartment and then starts the task of lining up the transmission input shaft with the clutch which I must add it has been a task tonight even with two guide bolts on either side of engine.  The water pump bolts will be done after the engine is engaged with the transmission.
  58. Dan continues to try to line up the transmission to engine, but the attempt fails.  Dan removes the engine from the vehicle along with the transmission and tries to install the two assemblies with the same results.  Problem was found that the drive plate shifted or was not properly aligned sin a universal clutch alignment tool was used.  A new clutch alignment tool , will be ordered, if one isn't found I will try to use the alignment tool I already have again.  This time the engine and transmission will be assembled outside of vehicle.  There is no charge for all this bad luck.
  59. Dan drives to three shops until finding a clutch alignment tool to borrow, The clutch assembly is now ready to be installed tomorrow
  60. Thanks Jim I received a payment today.
  61. Dan removes both turn signal assemblies from truck to replaces the wiring that has deteriated over time with a new wire & socket.
  62. Dan contines to replace and install more new wiring under the dash.
  63. Disolving begins at Carolina.Auto.Restorers.Inc between both business owners
  64. I started to move equipment and obtain the large engine stand.  The Flywheel will be removed and the engine will be mounted again on an heavy duty engine stand, so that the oil pump, engine oil pan, water pumps, & cylinder heads can be installed.  There is no charge for putting the engine back on the engine stand.  The reason this was not done before is I thought I wouldn't have any trouble sliding the long engine block onto the transmission in the vehicle, since I did I plan on installing engine & transmission as an assembly back in vehicle.
  65. Moved more equipment, so I can have the space to mount engine hoist & engine stand together.
  66. working on #37-40 Invoices
  67. Thank-you for check #1961
  68. Mailed Invoice#400
  69. Mount portion of engine stand to the rear of engine, than raise engine back on stand-There is no charge to do this operation. Then the engine hoist will be moved to flip the Jeep chassis.
  70. Finish installing engine to engine stand and flip over engine to expose crankshaft.
  71. Thank your for check # 1988.
  72. This evening I worked on cleaning and preparing the crossmember to be bonded.
  73. There is no charge for this cleaning from storage.
  74. Spray Rust prevention on part for bonding process
  75. 07-11-2009-~~-The Crossmember is currently being bonded, photo's later
